I'm still waiting for a verdict on the Monkeys Reloaded case in Cobb County, Georgia. Meanwhile, it seems the insistence on teaching creation mythology on par with scientific theory is not restricted to the South. The Yankees can now hang their heads right along with those backward Rebels they often love to hate... More after the jump... »

*waves* I'm glad you all came to visit. Hope everyone is well. I was surprised to see the huge spike in traffic, and really, really grateful to find so many coming from OH. We're pretty good, though a bit dismayed over the recent election (as I'm sure you all could guess, even without the blog that lets me argue quietly with the world beyond my little door). To the keeper of Expostulation, and Lauren, thank you. I've just found your messages. It's been a while - a year now? I think I owe a visit to my old friends. Love to you all, Kiosan / jax Thursday, November 18

So, the Republican Party is the only virtuous party. Members only sleep with their own wives and they are always open and above-board in their dealings. And, in 1993, they stated – quite plainly – that they hold themselves to a higher ethical standard then Democrats.
But now they're not so sure about that. More after the jump... »

If you listen to the far right (or read the right paper), Bush wants Porter Goss, the new CIA Director, to shake up and restructure the CIA, re-engineering its dysfunction into sleek function and reforming its ingrained bureaucratic staleness into an effective and efficient super-spy headquarters... I assume that by now we’ve all heard the story of Marines in Fallujah shooting an unarmed prisoner in a mosque. Maybe they even shot 2 or 3 others (reports vary) before NBC’s embedded reporter Kevin Sites began rolling tape. Sites now says there were two other men slumped by a wall who appeared to have been freshly shot. The Iraqis are, of course, outraged. There seems to be some confusion as to why, exactly, that is... It appears that recently-nominated for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice could give lessons in the Peter Principle, probably making a killing on the motivational speaking circuit. I'll bet she can really put on a show.
Oh, that's right - we've already seen it. And really, it's not that impressive. More after the jump... »

BushCheney’s nomination of Alberto Gonzales to replace John Ashcroft as US Attorney General has me concerned. While Gonzales is not as rabidly anti-choice as Ashcroft regarding women’s reproductive rights, and that has some left-leaning moderates a bit mollified (and some rightwing hard-liners a bit unhappy), the personal feelings of the AG – any AG – on the matter of choice are largely irrelevant. The AG is a lawyer, not a judge, and while he may elect to prosecute certain cases and not others in favor of his personal bias, he is still constrained by the limits of the law, not, like the Supreme Court, able to make new law based on alternative interpretation. That said, let’s look at a few of Gonzales’ other credentials. He began as Bush’s counsel in Texas... More after the jump... » Monday, November 15

The school system in Cobb County, Georgia, recently placed stickers on their science textbooks stating that "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the evolution of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."
The statements are almost laughable in their combined weak grasp of science, scientific language, and thinly veiled call to reject science altogether in favor of literal interpretation of religious creation myth. More after the jump... » Friday, November 12

The Mommy Wars. If you’re a female who’s been paying any attention to the media since the mid-1980s, then chances are you’ve heard of them. Woman against woman, mother against mom, they’re purported to be the epic saga of greed, martyrdom, selfishness and sainthood causing insurmountable dissention in the ranks of women’s sisterhood. I do not think it means what you think it means.

According to the Right Manifesto, entertainers should be seen, but not heard. Having an actual shot at being heard somehwere, they're not really entitled to free speech anymore and need to stfu.
But wait. Wasn't Ronald Reagan an actor? More after the jump... » |
